In a conversation today, the idea of authentic self, surfaced. I have been on a journey of seeing my authentic self and I have been hearing so much about changing your identity. “Be the person who makes 1 million dollars or take on the identity of the person who has what you want.” I’ve discovered in my work of untangling the layers of myself and who I pretended to be that I have no desire to be a different version of myself. In fact, I believe that the more I am who I authentically am and the more layers of pretending and playing dress up, the more money and relationships and more of my desires will come to me and I will be able to receive them. What camp do you find yourself in?
I do believe it is true for some people to change their identity if it is fixed and not in alignment with where they are going. But for those of us who tend to adapt to others well, have survived through masking, or are generally easily influenced by others, our work is to shed layers of selves that we have picked up along the way that don’t actually reflect who we are. Often times the reclamation means moving through layers of shame and grief of not feeling accepted or not feeling like we could belong as our authentic selves.
One of my favorite questions penned by Hiro Boga is “Who are you when your primary vibration is joy?” Who are you when you can see yourself with the eyes of joy and declare that you are wonderful? From that place, the journey of change and transforming your identity becomes an exciting adventure and not a endless and merciless quest to fix yourself to finally become enough or loved or whole or whatever the end goal is.
